The global civilization has accepted hathayoga and vipassana because they have a clear, well-documented beneficial effect. Under the labels of "yoga" and "mindfulness", they are used as "decontextualised techniques", that is, as behavioral patterns without any regard for their theoretical underpinnings. Though these two techniques have been of great value for therapy and self-development even in this artificially constrained manner, it would be a great tragedy if science would stop here, and miss out on the source from which they have grown. In the long run, the way of thinking that created these techniques can contribute far more to the science of psychology than the isolated techniques.
