Moral relativism and the practice of Integral yoga

Kundan Singh — CIIS, San Francisco.

With the emergence of the postmodern critique of epistemology, relativism has become an important issue of concern among academicians. It is increasingly being recognized that there are no universal standards to judge the behaviour of individuals or the mores of a society forcing scholars to admit to the existence of moral relativism. In the light of the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, this paper will argue that the intellectual and emotional understanding of moral relativism can be a welcome development in the practice of Integral yoga. The paper will specifically focus on how it can lead to the transcendence of the logical and discursive mind, and help one attain the quality of equanimity or samata.
