Spirituality and counseling

Manasi Pahwa — Mumbai.

If we want to understand a human being in all his dimensions we must include among the biological, psychological, and sociological dimensions, the spiritual dimension as well. Most traditional forms of counseling and psychotherapy help in the strengthening of the “ego” which is the root cause of the problems that many people face. The goal of counseling should shift from “ego-growth” to “inner-growth”. Inner growth means finding the kingdom of heaven within, i.e., finding oneself. For a counselor it becomes important to develop skills not only of empathy but also of understanding and love. Love brings profound healing, and understanding leads to lessening of fear. Thus counselors should decrease their concern with ego-functioning, and fitting the client into our sick society; and instead, practice the healing art with compassion, skill, and mindfulness. In this way they can treat the spirit and help people transcend pain and ills.
