Application of Indian philosophy, yoga and spirituality to psychology as an academic science

Shushama J. Bhosale — A.M. College, Hadapsar.

Human nature is distinct from that of animals by virtue of its spiritual qualities. We cannot live an integrated wholesome and creative life unless we fuse the biological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of our life into one unified reality. Psychology is the official way of knowing ourselves in the rising global culture. If psychology thinks it can only know external behavior, humanity as a whole will learn to accept that it cannot deal effectively with inner and higher aspects of reality and in due time will begin to ignore the most valuable aspects of what it means to be human. Indian psychology refers to the psychologically relevant material in the ancient Indian thought, and holds that knowledge of the self and of the divine is the most valuable element of human experience. Indian psychology belongs to the future and has great relevance for the whole of humanity.
